The veena is one of India's oldest string instruments. Its ancestors were the ancient yazh, a stringed instrument similar to the Grecian harp. In his Natya Shastra, Bharata explains the theory of the 22 sruti-s in an octave using two experimental veena-s.

The veena was then subjected to numerous innovations and modifications. Raghunath Nayak (circa 17th century) of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu is credited with creating the instrument in its current form.

Melody is produced by four metal strings above the frets. These are stretched across a wide bridge that sits on the veena's body. Three additional strings run alongside the instrument's neck. These are used to keep time and to play with the drone. The small resonator is resting on the performer's left lap as he sits cross-legged on the stage. The left hand's fingers press, pull, and glide across the frets, while the right hand's fingers pluck and twang the strings.

The term 'Veena' comes from the Sanskrit language. In ancient and medieval English literature, this became a popular term. It is mentioned in several Vedic texts, including the Rig Veda, Samaveda, Satapatha Brahmana, and Taittiriya Samhita. According to renowned music professor Sunnera Kasliwal, the musical instrument Vana has evolved into the term veena in modern times. The use of this musical instrument is mentioned in the Upanishads, Rigveda, and Atharva Veda. The veena is mentioned as a musical instrument in Bharata Muni's Natya Shastra.

Veena is an ancient instrument mentioned in our mythologies and Vedic literature such as the Atharvaveda, Rig Veda, and Natya Shastras. It is a musical instrument used by Goddess Sarasvati that dates back to the Vedic eras. Carnatic music, which dates back to the 17th century, makes use of Veena music. Later, Hindustani music was added.

The veena is a complete instrument that includes the three fundamental components: sruti, laya, and Sahitya. Its main draw is the mellow tonal quality, which can evoke a meditative atmosphere.
